Tourism Organisation and Governance
Austria is a federal republic with a parliamentary democracy and nine federal states, which have the legislative and executive competences for tourism affairs. However, as tourism is a crosscutting sector, European Union and federal laws also apply.
At the national level, the Federal Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism is responsible for tourism policy. Each federal state has its own tourism strategy and tourism organisation, but cooperation at the national level is essential for ensuring the continuous and successful development of tourism.
