Apprenticeships and Vocational Training
Apprenticeship based on the principle "learning in practice for practice" has a long tradition in Austria.
The Vocational Training Act (Berufsausbildungsgesetz – BAG, only available in German) includes the related statutory rules.
Apprentices learn professional skills in entrepreneurial reality in companies. They get theoretical and general education in part-time vocational schools. To run this successful "dual system" all responsible bodies on federal, regional and local levels and companies work closely together.
At the end of 2025
- 102 878 apprentices did an apprenticeship training:
- 96 980 apprentices in 26.347 training-companies and
- 5 898 apprentices in inter-company training institutions
