Austria’s trade relations with America

Bilateral economic relations with North America

Austria traditionally has strong trading ties with the North American states – USA and Canada. According to the preliminary data produced by Statistics Austria for 2025, the two countries together represent 5.9 percent of the Austrian trading volume, of which about 90 percent involves the USA. After the decline in 2020 in the wake of the covid pandemic, trading with North America stepped up considerably. After a record of € 26.1 billion in 2024, trading decreased by 11.9 percent to € 23.0 billion in 2025.

Exports to the USA registered a decline of 20.4 percent to 12.9 billion in 2025. The USA ranked second (behind Germany and before Italy) among Austrian export destinations. At a share of 6.8 percent of Austria’s total exports, the USA remain by far the most important sales market both outside the EU and outside Europe (the share is more than two times higher that of China). At the same time, an import volume of € 7.7 billion made the USA the second most important import market outside Europe (behind China). The increase was 0.1 percent in 2025.

Austrian exports to Canada registered an increase of 6.6 percent in 2025 at nearly € 1.7 billion. Imports from Canada increased by 11.6 percent to € 668 million in 2025. In total, Austria’s trade volume with Canada was € 2.3 billion in 2025.

Bilateral economic relations with Latin America
