Trade policy

As a small, open economy, Austria is highly dependent on exports. Trade creates domestic prosperity and secures jobs. Further liberalization of global trade is of enormous importance for Austria’s future as a business location.

Austria has a strongly internationally oriented economy with many international successful companies. Trade with the European Union plays a major role in Austria’s economy. About two-thirds of Austrian exports go to other EU member states, primarily to Germany. The most important non-EU partner is the United States. In addition, new EU free trade agreements are creating new markets for the Austrian exporting companies. Austria’s export structure is characterized by strong exports in the areas of machinery and vehicles, chemical products (including pharmaceuticals), and manufactured goods. In addition to trade in goods, the export of services is also of great importance to Austria’s economy.

In today’s globalised and networked economy, multilateral trade policy is playing an ever more important role. This site offers general information, for instance on WTOmatters, as well as further details on multilateral trade policy.
