Tourism and the SDGs

In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, along with 17 ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to, inter alia, end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice and fix climate change until 2030. Tourism has been included in three goals, but it has the potential to contribute to all of the goals. This capability was further highlighted by the United Nations declaring 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

In contrast to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which expired in 2015, the SDGs apply equally to developing and industrialised countries. The SDGs are not only aimed at states and public authorities, but also explicitly call on companies to ‘use their creativity and innovation to solve the challenges of sustainable development.’

On the German version of the website you will find the interpretation of the World Tourism Organisation (UN Tourism) for each of the 17 SDGs, details of the sub-goals, sources of information and examples of Austrian initiatives to implement the 2030 Agenda in tourism. No claim is made to completeness.

We also offer a platform for research work by pupils and students from Austrian schools, universities of applied sciences and universities specialising in tourism. These papers provide findings and insights on the topic of tourism and sustainability and therefore also on the SDGs. They serve as a source of information for all interested parties, especially pupils and students who are working on similar issues.
