Proof Houses

The tasks of the proof houses include the testing of weapons, blank-firing guns and muzzleloaders as well as ammunition testing.

Tasks of the Proof Houses

Weapon Testing

Handguns for civilian purposes (hunting, sporting and defensive weapons) must undergo a safety test before they can be handed over to authorised persons. Safety for the user is ensured by strict requirements regarding the dimensional accuracy, functional reliability and durability of a weapon. The defects identified during the inspection demonstrate why such checks are essential—especially given the dangers that unsafe weapons can pose to users and those around them.

Testing of Blank-firing Guns and Muzzleloaders

The testing of salute wepons, salute canons and muzzleloaders designed for black powder, which are used by traditional clubs for ceremonial salutes as part of the preservation of customs and traditions, is required to ensure their safe use in public.

Ammunition Testing

In addition to firearm testing, all commercially sold ammunition for hunting and sporting purposes must undergo type approval and manufacturing control. After successful type approval, a proof mark must be affixed to every smallest packaging unit. The ammunition proof mark is issued by the Vienna proof house only after extensive ballistic measurements and inspections. Only after successful completion of these controls is distribution to manufacturers and dealers permitted.

You can find the legal basis for the proof houses on our German site "Beschussämter".
