Innovation Salzburg – Tech4Green Hub & Startup Salzburg: EnerCube Enables Large-Scale Transition to Heat Pumps

Date: 20.10.2026
Thematic focus: Shaping the Energy and Mobility Transition

Eight out of ten residential units in Austria still rely on fossil fuels for heating – often because replacing existing heating systems is hindered by space constraints, a shortage of skilled workers, and the complexity of installation. This is where EnerCube, based in Köstendorf, comes in: founders David Riedl and Laurenz Sutterlüty are developing prefabricated heat pump heating units that are installed outside buildings, enabling a scalable transition to heat pumps for entire residential complexes.

Salzburg’s innovation network played a key role in EnerCube’s journey from its first prototypes built in a carport to a growing company: after participating in the SHAPE preincubation programme, EnerCube completed Startup Salzburg’s FACTORY+ incubation programme, gaining access to coaching, regional funding and the nationwide AplusB network. Innovation Salzburg also provided targeted support in securing funding. In 2025, EnerCube participated as an expert in sustainable construction in the Tech4Green panel at the SALZ Innovation Festival – valuable visibility that opened new doors.

Consistent collaboration continues to be a key factor in EnerCube’s success: with Vonovia as both a partner and investor, contracts have been secured for more than 1,000 EnerCube units. In October 2026, a strategic partnership with Panasonic followed: a new product range with capacities of up to 180 kW will enable the large-scale replacement of heating systems in commercial, industrial and municipal buildings across Germany and Austria from 2027 onwards.

This example demonstrates that when funding, tailored support and visibility work together within an innovation network, a regional startup can become a driving force behind the transition to sustainable heating.
