When metal parts are almost indistinguishable from one another, mistakes can easily happen. This was the experience of RK-Metalltechnik in Lower Austria. After laser cutting, employees had to assign the components to the correct containers. "We were looking for a solution that would reduce errors and increase productivity," says Managing Director Reinhard Krumpholz.

The company tested an AR assistance system (augmented reality). Before investing, it wanted to find out whether the technology would work in day-to-day operations. The European Digital In-novation Hub (EDIH) "AI5innovation" supported the company in this process. Through the "Test before invest" offering, companies can test new technologies free of charge with funding from European and national programmes.

For RK-Metalltechnik, PROFACTOR GmbH developed a prototype system that uses a projector to display information directly onto the sheet-metal parts. "This allows employees to see at a glance which part goes into which container," explains Christian Wöginger of PROFACTOR. Testing confirmed that the solution works reliably under real-world conditions.

"AI5innovation" helps manufacturing companies advance their digitalization and AI initiatives. The hub provides training, opportunities for hands-on testing, support with funding applications, and access to a broad network of research and industry partners.

Business Upper Austria contributes to the initiative through the Mechatronics Cluster and the Building Innovation Cluster. Both clusters connect companies with research institutions, support training activities, and provide access to infrastructure and specialist expertise. As part of a European network, "AI5innovation" brings international expertise together with regional implementation.
