Working together with GRÜNSTATTGRAU for the green cities of the future
Datum: 03.03.2026
Thematic focus: Shaping the energy and mobility transition
Innovation laboratories are understood as open development spaces in which actors from practice, research, and society jointly design and test new approaches and solutions for complex challenges. In these environments, knowledge exchange is promoted and user-centered, market-ready solutions are further developed.
It was precisely in this spirit that GRÜNSTATTGRAU was launched in 2017 as the first innovation laboratory for building greening, fully owned by the Austrian Association for Building Greening (VfB). The initiative was founded on the conviction that urban greening is more than just a subject of research – it is a key factor for climate-resilient, livable cities and an essential component of blue-green infrastructure. Based on the experience that many good ideas failed due to insufficient networking between science, business, and public administration, a space was created where knowledge can be pooled, innovations tested, and transformed into market-ready solutions.
Today, the competence center can look back on an impressive track record: since its founding, more than 300 new partnerships have been established, over 500 R&D projects have been supported, and nearly 200 people have participated in the specially developed training programs and courses on building greening. Numerous lectures, consultations, and excursions further complement the transfer of knowledge.
GRÜNSTATTGRAU has successfully emerged as the first innovation laboratory from the BMIMI-funded program and has established itself as an independent competence center.
