ecoplus Kunststoff-Cluster: OneMoreTime - Recycle multiple times — safely
Date: 23.06.2026
Thematic focus: Clean Industrial Deal/ Green Deal
Recycle multiple times — safely: The “OneMoreTime” research project by the ecoplus Plastics Cluster explores the limits of the circularity of polyolefins and polystyrene.
From 2030, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will require mandatory recycled content quotas for packaging, including in sensitive areas such as food, hygiene and cosmetics. The Austrian-German consortium, coordinated by the ecoplus Plastics Cluster Lower Austria and the Industrievereinigung für Lebensmitteltechnologie und Verpackung in Germany, is analysing the still insufficiently researched effects of repeated recycling cycles on the properties of polyolefins (HDPE, LDPE, PP) and polystyrene (PS) under real industrial conditions.
Safety-relevant substances that emerge as a result of multiple recycling cycles are identified, documented and assessed from a regulatory perspective. The results are mapped in a database that can serve as a basis for approval processes, standardisation and new recycling standards.
Austrian companies and institutions from across the entire value chain are represented: recycling technology and mechanical engineering companies such as EREMA, Starlinger and Thermoplastkreislauf; packaging manufacturers and processors including Joma, Fries Kunststofftechnik, Miraplast, Jodl Verpackungen, Meier Verpackungen, G. Coreth and Klosterquell Hofer; waste management and system partners such as Altstoff Recycling Austria; and scientific and safety experts including AGES and the Austrian Research Institute for Chemistry and Technology (OFI).
